Community Involvement

Do you know the name of the man who picks up your trash each week? How about the librarian who puts together entertaining programs for your children to attend? At the City of Nacogdoches, there are many wonderful people that work hard every day to make our community a great place to live. If you are looking for information about our city or ways to become a more involved citizen, the City of Nacogdoches offers many ways you can help!

When I first moved to Nacogdoches is 2015, I had no idea that our city had so many ways to become involved with the community, and I didn’t know that you could make big changes as a regular citizen. Seeking out ways to become more involved has given me a passion for Nacogdoches that every citizen should have. Whether you are simply wanting to be more "in the know" about decisions being made, or you would like to help make those decisions and bring new ideas to the community, our city has many outlets to help you find your niche.

If you are interested in learning about your city government, start with NAC 101. This program teaches you about each department and what they do to benefit the community each and every day. NAC 101 is open to all residents of the City of Nacogdoches 18 years of age and older. Each class is limited to 20 participants and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. After 8 sessions you are given a certificate of completion. You will receive information about city budgets, upcoming projects, and insight on why our local government makes certain decisions. The City of Nacogdoches also hosts a podcast called NacChat to answer questions you may have, such as what new businesses are coming to town and how the streets are maintained. Videos about city departments and community activities can be found on local Channel 21, YouTube, and on The City of Nacogdoches- City Government Facebook Page.

If you are looking for ways to be more involved in your community, consider joining a board or committee that needs volunteers. The Public Library Boards, Parks Board, Planning and Zoning Commission, and Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors are just a few of the wonderful ways to make a difference and become more knowledgeable about the decisions being made throughout Nacogdoches. For information on which committees are looking for new members, check out ci.nacogdoches.tx.us or call our City Secretary at (936) 559-2506.

If you are not interested in serving on a committee but still want to understand the decision-making process, attend our City Council meetings! These meetings are conducted on the first and third Tuesdays of the month inside the Council Chambers at City Hall. Letting your voice be heard can make a huge impact on the decisions made for our community! Also, if you can't attend the meetings live, you may tune into Channel 21, or on the city's website and watch the live stream of the meeting each month.

There are truly countless ways to become informed. Whether you are passionate about one specific area or would just like a little more knowledge about Nacogdoches, everyone can benefit from being an active member of our community. Connecting with your neighbors and initiating positive change can increase your quality of life and make Nacogdoches an even greater place to live.
