Calling all artists in the Nacogdoches community! As a part of the ongoing #CityofNac Discussion Series, the City of Nacogdoches is partnering with Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) to host an Arts and Culture Photo Contest at the Cole Art Center in Downtown Nacogdoches from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 4, 2017.
This event will be utilized to highlight our community and showcase Nacogdoches art and culture, as defined by the residents of our city. As stated in a letter of intent submitted to the Texas Commission of the Arts by SFASU and the City of Nacogdoches last year, the goal of the Nacogdoches Cultural District is to attract visitors by highlighting and linking the many attractions to with our ongoing community activities. The City of Nacogdoches hopes to accurately portray the culture of the community within the proposed Cultural District.
The district's boundaries combines SFASU and Historic Downtown Nacogdoches. Within the boundaries of the proposed district are over 100 shops, restaurants, and small businesses. Also included in the Historic Downtown is the Cole Art Center, which hosts multiple community-wide and regionally attended artistic exhibitions, showings, and festivals. Additionally, Stephen F. Austin's College of Fine Arts, houses four concert and theatrical venues, which play host to several well attended public art events. The College of Fine Arts will serve as the northern boundary of the district.
In order to gain public feedback on the designation efforts, the ad hoc committee (which consists of multiple members of SFASU and the City of Nacogdoches) is hosting the Arts and Culture Photo Contest. This will help organizers gain insight from the community on how they define culture and art in Nacogdoches. This contest will be an introduction to the hopeful designation of the Texas Commission of the Arts Cultural District to Nacogdoches, Texas.
The event is open to the community, and SFASU and City representatives will be present to gather feedback on how citizens feel about art within the community. We hope to bring community members together to hear their thoughts and ideas about the proposed district, as well as touch base with artists in the area of what they feel is our Nacogdoches culture.
The photos showcased at the Cole Art Center are not required to be professional shots, and can portray any art or culture relevant to the City of Nacogdoches as defined by the community. The City of Nacogdoches and SFASU hope to receive photos of art, culture, and creativity in action captured in still photography. There will be a $250 prize for the winner of the contest and many photos will be featured on the City of Nacogdoches' social media platforms.
Deadline for submissions will be Monday, May 29, 2017 at 5:00 PM for a chance to be featured at the Cole Art Center exhibit. Photos may be submitted electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org. A full list of eligibility requirements is available here.
